Lafayette, IN Animal Ordinances: Microchipping (2026)

Lafayette's animal code does not impose a blanket citywide microchip mandate on every pet owner. Instead, the requirement is tied to the return of an impounded animal. Section 10.08.050(D) authorizes the "enforcement authority," the shelter or Animal Control, to decline releasing an impounded dog or cat back to its owner until it receives sufficient proof that the animal has been, or will be, implanted with a microchip. The same subsection carves out an exception: the enforcement authority cannot withhold the animal if a veterinarian provides a written statement that the animal should not be microchipped for health reasons.

This sits alongside the broader impoundment-return scheme in § 10.08.050: an owner must also pay impoundment and kennel fees plus a $25 Animal Control Officer's fee, and enter into a dangerous animal or nuisance animal agreement if applicable, and reclaim the animal within five days of notice or be deemed to have relinquished ownership, risking a "Failure to Reclaim" fine of up to $250 under subsection (C). If the enforcement authority determines the animal's return would result in further violations, it can refuse to return the animal altogether, subject to the owner's right to appeal to the Board of Works under § 10.08.090 within three business days.

The microchip requirement is enforced by the Lafayette Police Department's Animal Control unit and the shelter operating under contract with the city, and a microchip implant also recurs as a possible term of a "dangerous animal" or "nuisance animal" agreement elsewhere in Title 10.
