Piscataway, NJ Building Safety: Building Permits (2026)

Under Piscataway Township Code § 14-1.1, the Township has established a State Uniform Construction Code enforcing agency called the Building Division of the Department of Community Development, staffed by a Construction Official, Building Subcode Official, Plumbing Subcode Official, Electrical Subcode Official, Fire Protection Subcode Official, and any other subcode officials the state Department of Community Affairs later adds; the Construction Official is the chief administrator and the public does business with the agency at 505 Sidney Road. Section 14-2.2 assigns the Construction Official the duty to enforce all laws relating to the construction, alteration, removal, and demolition of buildings and structures under N.J.A.C.

5:25. The actual trigger for a permit shows up in the fee schedule at § 14-1.3: a construction permit fee is charged as the sum of the applicable subcode fees, due before the permit is issued, and it reaches nearly every project type, new construction at $0.035 per cubic foot with a $150 minimum, additions at $0.030 per cubic foot, renovations and alterations at $27 per $1,000 of cost, accessory sheds over 100 square feet at a flat $75, decks, above-ground and in-ground pools, and any fence over six feet high or pool enclosure at $27 per $1,000 with a $75 minimum.

Plan review adds another 20% of the permit fee (5% for prototype plans), credited toward the final permit cost. Disabled residents and their parents or siblings can have the permit fee waived entirely for accessibility work under § 14-1.6.
