Piscataway, NJ Building Safety: Plumbing Permits (2026)

Section 23-11.2 of the Township Code places maintenance of service laterals, connections and fixtures on the property owner or user, who must keep them in good order and repair any leaks immediately. Before starting that work, the user must secure a plumbing permit, and cannot backfill any trench until the Township Plumbing Subcode Official has inspected and approved it; work found unacceptable must be removed and redone. That inspection duty sits within the Uniform Construction Code enforcement structure the Township created under § 14-1.1, which established the Building Division of the Department of Community Development and named a Plumbing Subcode Official alongside the Construction Official, Building Subcode Official, Electrical Subcode Official and Fire Protection Subcode Official, all reachable at 505 Sidney Road.

Section 14-1.3 sets the Plumbing Subcode fee schedule charged for that permit: a stack, water closet, urinal, bathtub, lavatory, shower, floor drain or sink each carries a $15 fee, a roof drain is $30, a residential water heater is $35 ($75 commercial), a residential washing machine connection is $25 ($65 commercial), and gas piping runs $85. If the Township later finds the lateral was not maintained under § 23-11.3, and a resulting blockage or leak in the right-of-way is traced to the user's action or neglect, the Township can bill the property owner for the labor, equipment and material costs of the repair.
