Ankeny, IA Building Safety: Carbon Monoxide Detectors (2026)

Section 180.29 of the Ankeny Code amends International Fire Code Section 915.1.1, Where Required, and replaces the model text with the city's own trigger list. Carbon monoxide detection must be installed in assembly (Group A), educational (Group E), institutional (Group I) and residential (Group R) occupancies whenever any one of four conditions exists: the building contains a CO source; the building contains or is supplied by a CO-producing forced-air furnace; the building has an attached private garage; or the building has a CO-producing vehicle used inside it.

Section 915.1.1 sends the installer to Section 915.2 for the required detector locations within the qualifying occupancy. Section 180.28 separately strikes the general exception that would otherwise excuse some buildings from Section 915.1 altogether, so the city's list of four triggers is now the operative rule rather than an exception-riddled model section. A violation of any Fire Code provision, including the CO-detector trigger list, is subject to penalty as prescribed by law under Section 113.4 (city Section 180.12), and the city's general municipal infraction schedule at Section 4.03 sets that penalty at up to $750 for a first offense and up to $1,000 for each repeat offense, counting each day of noncompliance separately.
