Parker, CO Building Safety: Carbon Monoxide Detectors (2026)

Chapter 11.02 of the Parker Municipal Code adopts the 2021 International Residential Code for One- and Two-Family Dwellings as the Parker Residential Code under Section 7.7 of the Town's Home Rule Charter. Section 11.02.050 lists the Town Council's amendments to that model code, and amendment (19) rewrites the first sentence of IRC Section R315.3, Location, so that carbon monoxide alarms in dwelling units must be installed within fifteen feet of the entrance to each bedroom. That fifteen-foot standard replaces the base IRC placement language and applies whenever a carbon monoxide alarm is required in a Parker home, including new construction and additions or alterations that create a dwelling unit under the adopted code.

The same amendment package tightens other life-safety placement rules nearby, including the required exhaust rate for bathrooms under Section R303.3 and the minimum indoor temperature standard under Section R303.10, which Parker raised from 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Compliance is checked by the Building Division as part of the building permit inspection process the Chief Building Official administers under the Parker Building Code and the Parker Administrative Code referenced in Chapter 11.01. Because the amendment sits inside the adopted 2021 IRC edition, it took effect January 1, 2022, the effective date the Town Council set for the current Chapter 11.02 code cycle, and it stays in force until the Town Council amends Section 11.02.050 again in a future code adoption ordinance.
