Canton, OH Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Canton adopts the current edition of the National Electrical Code, NFPA Volume 70, as approved by the American Standards Association and listed in the Ohio Building Code, applying it to all residential and commercial structures under Codified Ordinances Section 1313.02. Section 1313.02(b) bars any certificate of inspection unless the electric, power and heating installations strictly conform to that code, Ohio statutes, and Industrial Commission of Ohio rules. Section 1313.08 requires a written permit application before electrical work begins, stating the contractor's name, the property owner and address, and the expected start date; minor work such as repairing flush and snap switches, replacing fuses, changing lamp sockets and receptacles, or insulating bare joints is exempt.

A contractor or homeowner who starts work without the required permit, absent an emergency electrical installation, must still obtain and pay for the original permit plus a penalty of twice the original fee. Electrical permits run for twelve months from issuance and can be revoked by the Electrical Inspector for misrepresentation or subterfuge. Section 1313.09 sets fees, including a $50 charge for new or reconnected residential service plus $2.00 per 100 square feet of area served for other permits. Only registered electrical contractors, licensed journeyman electricians, or registered apprentices working under direct supervision may perform the work, and unauthorized transfer of a registration triggers a separate penalty equal to three times the required registration or license fee.
