Elizabeth, NJ Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 15.04.050.B of Elizabeth's Uniform Construction Code chapter adopts by reference the 'National Electrical Code/1975,' including every subsequent revision the state of New Jersey has adopted, as the city's electrical subcode, and requires three copies to be filed with the city clerk, the construction official and the director of the department of construction. Two named sections of the prior 1975 electrical chapter, now codified as Sections 15.04.070 (inspector qualifications) and 15.04.080 (temporary wiring exception), are specifically retained even though the rest of the old Chapter 28 was repealed.

The subcode electrical official, appointed alongside additional electrical inspectors, has authority under Section 15.04.010.C to 'make all electrical inspections and provide such written reports and recommendations as the construction official shall request when considering an application for an electrical permit,' and may also authorize service connections or disconnections with the local power company for public health or safety reasons. The permit fee schedule at Section 15.04.040.D charges by device and rating: outlets, switches and fixtures run $45.00 for the first 25 and $10.00 per increment of 20 after that; motors and transformers scale from $20.00 up to $550.00 above 100 horsepower or 112.5 kilowatts; photovoltaic systems run $20.00 to $125.00 by system size; and electrical service panels range from $65.00 for a 100-amp panel to $575.00 for anything above 1,000 amps, with a flat $65.00 minimum fee applied to any electrical permit.
