Greece, NY Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 97-4 requires every electrical installation, alteration or repair of wiring for electric light, heat or power and signal systems in Greece to conform to the National Electrical Code as cited in the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, as amended from time to time by the National Fire Protection Association, unless the Town's own chapter or Building Code sets a different, controlling requirement. The Building Inspector, acting through the Town Clerk, licenses private electrical inspectors under § 97-5 to inspect wiring work, and those inspectors must meet detailed qualification standards in § 97-6, including state authorization, $1,000,000 in personal injury and $5,000,000 excess liability coverage, an office in the Rochester service area staffed at least eight hours a day, and inspectors with a minimum of 4,000 to 8,000 hours of electrician experience.

Under § 97-10, it is a violation to install, alter or repair wiring before filing a written inspection application with the electrical inspector, and a separate violation to connect wiring to any power source before the inspector issues a temporary certificate of compliance. The electrical inspector must report all applications and temporary certificates to the Building Inspector, and must maintain inspection records for at least six years under § 97-6(H).
