Gretna, LA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Chapter 10, Article III, Division 2 of the Gretna Code puts electrical permitting in the hands of the electrical inspector. Under § 10-113(a), every person installing, repairing, or altering electrical equipment carrying more than 32 volts open-circuit potential in or on a Gretna building or premises has to file a permit application first, and no work starts until the electrical inspector issues that permit. The application, per § 10-113(b), spells out the installation or repair down to square footage, outlet count, circuit sizes, motor horsepower and voltage, and the purpose the building will serve once the work is done; faulty or substandard work is grounds for revoking the permit and suspending or revoking the contractor's license.

Under § 10-114, drawings and specifications go with the application, and a state-registered electrical engineer has to stamp the plans for any service over 200-amp single-phase or 150-amp three-phase. The electrical inspector, under § 10-65, can enter any building or premises during reasonable hours to inspect, test, or reinspect wiring, and interfering with that inspection is unlawful. 00 for elevator or escalator wiring, listed in § 10-116. 00. Concealing wiring before inspection is barred under § 10-149(d), which ties compliance back to the National Electrical Code, and the electrical inspector will not sign a certificate of approval until the work has been inspected and found to meet every requirement of the article.
