Lyon County, NV Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 15.239.01 adopts the 2023 National Electrical Code, NFPA 70, as part of the Building Codes of Lyon County under authority of Nevada Revised Statutes 244.105, 278.580, 278.583 and 444.350. Section 15.239.02 amends the code locally: Section E3901.4.2 of the Residential Code and NEC section 210.52(2) are amended to require receptacle outlets at all island countertops, and using future wiring provisions, such as capped conductors or unused outlet boxes, as a substitute for those receptacles is expressly prohibited. Peninsular countertops shorter than six feet, measured from the connecting wall to the outer edge, are exempted from the receptacle requirement, though future-wiring substitutes remain barred there too.

Section 15.239.06 requires a separate permit for each building or structure covered by the electrical code before work is erected, altered, repaired or converted, though a single combined permit may cover building, plumbing and electrical work on one structure. Permits are issued by the Community Development Department. The county also amended Table R301.2 of the Northern Nevada Amendments to raise the Seismic Design Category from D1 to D2 for county residential construction, so an electrician's structural anchoring work on new construction is inspected against the higher category.

This chapter governs only unincorporated communities such as Dayton, Silver Springs, Stagecoach, Mound House and Smith Valley; Fernley and Yerington administer electrical permitting under their own separate city codes.
