Sec. 185 sets the electrical permit rules: a homeowner's permit is available only to the homeowner or resident immediate family performing work at a single-family dwelling that the applicant owns, occupies, does not rent out, and has a homestead exemption on from the county tax assessor, and only a qualifying homeowner may obtain a permit under that route. Sec. 183 requires any electrical contracting business to register with the inspections and permits department and to have a licensed master electrician on staff who registers their name, address and employer and is responsible for the work performed under any permit they pull; that master must maintain adequate supervision over journeymen and other workers on the job.

Sec. 187 makes it unlawful for a master to let unauthorized workers perform electrical work under the master's permit, to conceal electrical work before inspection, or to connect power to public or commercial premises without an electrical inspector's approval. The substantive wiring standard is the National Electrical Code, 2020 edition, adopted in its entirety by sec. 211. Sec. 184 requires an electrical permit even for temporary meter locations and temporary power on a construction site, capped at 90 days per temporary power permit though multiple can be issued for one job, and sec. 188 requires slab, rough-in and final inspections before a certificate of compliance issues.
