Tucson, AZ Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 6-84 adopts "the document entitled 'National Electrical Code, 2023 Edition' published by the National Fire Protection Association, with local amendments," attached to Ordinance No. 12171 as Exhibit H. Section 6-83 spells out how that code gets enforced: the electrical inspection supervisor's duties include inspecting the installation of, and approving or condemning, all electrical wiring, fixtures, apparatus, appliances, devices, or equipment; controlling the types and classes of materials and the method, manner, and workmanship for installation; receiving applications for issuing permits for electrical installations and repairs; examining and approving plans and specifications for proposed electrical work; and certifying compliance with approved plans once the work is complete.

Under § 6-82, the supervisor must meet the city's position classification qualifications and is assisted by electrical inspectors who meet their own minimum qualifications. Three certified copies of the adopted NEC, with amendments, are kept on file with the city clerk under § 6-85 for public inspection during regular office hours, and the mayor and council can amend the electrical code at any time under § 6-86. Because these sections sit in Chapter 6, a wiring installation done without the required permit or inspection is enforced the same way as any other building-code violation in the chapter.
