Wayne County, IN Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 151.05(A)(4) incorporates the Indiana Electrical Code, along with the Safety Code for Health Care Facilities, by reference under Article 17 of I.A.C. Title 675, including all later published amendments with their fixed effective dates; copies are kept on file with the Building Commissioner under subsection (B). Section 151.06(A)(2) then requires an electrical permit from the Building Commissioner's office before beginning the installation, alteration, extension or replacement of electrical wiring, including additional circuits, rewiring and circuit replacement, and before installing, relocating or replacing any permanent electrical service.

The fee schedule in § 151.09 sets a flat $35 electrical permit fee, separate from the $35 plumbing permit and the variable building-permit fees; notably, mobile homes require only an improvement location permit, an electrical permit and a plumbing permit, with no building permit issued for them at all. Under § 151.10's inspection schedule, electrical work must be roughed in and visible at the framing inspection, before drywall or insulation covers it, and re-inspection fees apply if work is not ready when an inspector arrives.

Like other permits under this chapter, an electrical permit expires one year from issuance under § 151.06(B), with one free six-month extension available under § 151.07. Violating the permit requirement falls under the same enforcement scheme as the rest of Chapter 151: a fine of $100 to $1,000 per day under § 151.99, and a doubled permit fee under § 151.09 for work started before the permit issued.
