Hackensack, NJ Building Safety: Fire Sprinkler Requirements (2026)

Chapter 166, Uniform Construction Code Enforcement, is Hackensack's administrative chapter for the state Uniform Construction Code at N.J.A.C. 5:23; whether a building must have fire sprinklers is a substantive standard set by the state code's Fire Protection Subcode, not by Hackensack's own ordinance text, so the Code does not print a residential sprinkler mandate of its own. Section 166-1 does create a Fire Protection Subcode Official as one of the enforcing-agency positions in the Division of Building Inspection, alongside the Construction Official and the Building, Plumbing and Electrical Subcode Officials, all qualified under P.L.

1975, c.217 and N.J.A.C. 5:23. Once a sprinkler system is required or chosen, Section 166-3A(10)(a) sets the local permit fee on a sliding scale by head count: $75 for up to 20 heads, $150 for 21 to 50, $250 for 51 to 100, $350 for 101 to 200, $500 for 201 to 400, $1,000 for 401 to 1,000, and $1.50 per head for anything over 1,000. The same fire subcode fee schedule separately prices a pre-engineered fire and heat suppression system at $200, standpipes at $400, and smoke and heat detectors on their own head-count scale from $100 up to $7,400.
