Troup County, GA Building Safety: Fire Sprinkler Requirements (2026)

Section 5.16 of the Troup County Unified Development Ordinance governs sprinkler system certification for buildings in unincorporated Troup County. A representative of the County fire marshal's office must be present to witness a flow test on every sprinkler system before it is accepted. At the final inspection the installer must also hand over sprinkler certification confirming the system follows NFPA guidelines and the manufacturer's instructions, a contractor's material and test certificate for above ground piping signed by a certificate of competency holder, a separate material and test certificate for underground piping signed by an approved Georgia-licensed contractor, current fire sprinkler piping welder certification, and, when the building includes a fire pump, acceptance testing data with a flow graph.

This certification package sits alongside the county's broader fire prevention permitting chain: Section 5.12 requires two full sets of construction plans, with sprinkler systems, fire pumps and suppression systems submitted separately from the building and architectural plans, and building plans must be approved before the sprinkler plans are reviewed. Section 5.17 then conditions the fire safety compliance certificate, required before any building can be occupied, on that underlying inspection record. Section 5.18 adds hydrant and connection specifics for sprinklered buildings: a fire hydrant must sit within 50 feet of the fire department connection, and any newly built commercial occupancy served by an approved water system needs a hydrant with at least 1,000 gallons per minute of flow within 250 linear feet.
