Old Bridge, NJ Business Licensing & Operations: Towing Companies (2026)

Chapter 527, Wreckers and Towing, was adopted by the Township Council 9-9-2002 by Ord. No. 42-02 and governs any company performing police-requested towing or roadside repair on Old Bridge Township roadways. Section 527-2 requires a license from the Township Clerk before a person or entity may perform this work; § 527-3 sets each license to run for a maximum one-year term expiring January 1. Under § 527-4, annual per-wrecker license fees are $100 for light-duty, $150 for medium-duty, and $200 for both heavy-duty and heavy-duty recovery wreckers, and fees are nonrefundable.

Section 527-5 requires state-compliant towing equipment specific to each wrecker class, and under § 527-6 licensees must register employees with the Old Bridge Police Department, submit to criminal history checks, avoid cruising for business, keep towed vehicles off public roadways, post a fee schedule at least two feet by two feet at their storage facility, and open that facility to the public Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to noon. Section 527-7 caps towing charges at $135 for Category I vehicles (0 to 10,000 pounds), $365 for Category II, and $550 for Category III, plus per-day storage fees of $50 (Category I), $100 (Category II) and $130 (Category III) for inside storage, with no storage fee for a vehicle retrieved within 12 hours.

Under § 527-9, the Police Department keeps rotational call lists by vehicle category rather than letting a single company handle all police-requested tows. Section 527-11 raises every fee in the chapter by 2% each January 1 starting in 2021. Enforcement runs through § 527-8: the Police Chief or a designee may suspend or revoke a license for noncompliance, generally after a hearing, on an escalating schedule.
