Dog Leash Laws

Alamance County's Animal Control Ordinance does not impose a blanket leash law, but once an animal control officer determines a dog or other animal is a public nuisance under Section II.B, it becomes unlawful for the keeper to let that animal run at large. Animal control officers may also seize any animal unlawfully at large under Section III.

Breed Restrictions

Alamance County has no breed-specific ban; instead its Animal Control Ordinance lets the Sheriff declare any dog 'dangerous' or 'potentially dangerous' based on bite or attack history under Section II.D. Owners of a declared dangerous dog must keep it confined at home and leashed and muzzled off the property, or face a $500 civil penalty.
