Dark Sky Rules
Georgetown County bans artificial light that spills onto the beach anywhere in unincorporated areas of the Waccamaw Neck, Litchfield and DeBordieu. Adopted by County Council in 1989 to protect nesting loggerhead sea turtles, the ordinance prohibits floodlights, requires pole lights be shielded to a narrow seaward arc, and caps temporary construction lighting at fifteen feet. Violators face a magistrate's court fine after a thirty-day notice to comply.
