In unincorporated Georgetown County, the Development Regulations governing subdivisions require tree protection to be installed before any land disturbance around every significant and landmark tree standing in a new road right-of-way, and exempt those same trees from the county's standard requirement to clear all trees, stumps and brush before grading begins. The Georgetown County Planning Commission enforces the rule during subdivision plat review.
