Elgin, IL Curfew Laws: Park Curfew (2026)

010 of the Elgin Municipal Code lists the general rules for all city parks, and subsection M sets the curfew: parks close at sunset and open again at sunrise. Outside those hours, no one may be present in a park unless they are an on-duty city employee, taking part in an activity the city has authorized or scheduled, or carrying written permission from the director of parks and recreation. The blanket curfew does not apply to lighted tennis courts, lighted baseball fields or lighted golf course facilities, or to people walking to or from them; those facilities instead close at whatever time the director of parks and recreation sets and posts on-site, and anyone remaining after that posted time is in the same position as someone violating the general sunset curfew.

The same section regulates other conduct inside Elgin parks that overlaps with after-hours use, including a ban on lighting fires without the director's permission, a ban on discharging fireworks or firearms without written permission, and a rule that dogs must be leashed. Together these provisions give park staff and police a clear line for after-dark enforcement: absent a scheduled event or the director's written sign-off, anyone inside an Elgin park between sunset and sunrise is presumptively violating subsection M, regardless of whether a gate or sign is physically present at that particular park.
