Encinitas, CA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Encinitas zoning regulations under Municipal Code Title 30 establish fence height limits based on yard location and zoning district. In front yard setback areas, solid fences and walls are limited to 3 feet in height. Open fences (at least 75% open such as wrought iron or split rail) may be up to 42 inches in front yards. Side and rear yard fences may be up to 6 feet in height. Fences on top of retaining walls measure from the higher grade, and the combined height of retaining wall plus fence is regulated. Corner lots must maintain a sight triangle at street intersections where fences cannot exceed 3 feet within the visibility area. Properties in the Coastal Zone may require a Coastal Development Permit for fences over 6 feet or fences that could affect public coastal views. Fences in the Olivenhain community area may be subject to additional rural character design review.
