Medford, OR Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

732 of the Medford Land Development Code sets fence height by yard location. Front yard fencing in all zones except the Multi-Family Residential (MFR) zone cannot exceed 3 feet in height, measured from the grade of the street centerline. Within an MFR zone specifically, a fence within 10 feet of a street right-of-way is also capped at 3 feet unless the approving authority grants an exception. Side or rear yard fencing, where the lot isn't a through-lot, can rise to 8 feet, with height measured two ways depending on location: in a required yard abutting a street, height is the effective height from finished grade on the side nearest the street; in other required yards, height is measured from the highest adjacent finished ground level.

735(3) means nothing may obstruct vision between 3 feet and 10 feet above curb height within the mapped clear-vision triangle. 561 (Electrified Fences). 732(5); gates with a remote-operated opener may instead be set back 20 feet from the nearest existing or planned vehicle travel lane as the City Engineer determines, and secondary-entrance gates (for example, serving stored vehicles) may sit closer with Engineering Division approval. 733 carves out narrow exceptions: fence height around above-grade parking, loading, or storage areas is measured from the level of that area rather than natural grade, and arbors up to 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide with no more than 2 feet of depth may exceed the front-yard fence height limit.
