Old Bridge, NJ Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Township Code § 164-3 sets three distinct height ceilings depending on where a fence sits on a residential lot in Old Bridge Township. On an interior lot, a solid fence up to six feet high is allowed in the rear and side yards, but it cannot extend beyond the front building line of the house. There is a carve-out for close neighbors: if a house on the adjoining lot sits less than seven and one-half feet from the shared property line, a six-foot fence is not permitted in that side yard.

Corner lots get a similar six-foot allowance in the side and rear yard, extending to within five feet of the property line, but the fence cannot obstruct the sight triangle at the corner, the area drivers need to see oncoming traffic. In front yards, forward of the front building line, only a four-foot-high open fence is allowed; § 164-2 defines an open fence as one that is more than 50% open to the direct line of vision, distinguishing it from a solid fence, which is less than 50% open.

Every measurement is taken from grade, per Subsection D. A fence permit from the Department of Community Development is still required before installation under § 164-1, and any property owner who believes the height rule creates a hardship can appeal to the Township Council under § 164-8, which may grant a variance once neighbors have been notified of the appeal.
