Perth Amboy, NJ Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Perth Amboy City Code § 430-60(F) governs fences, walls and hedges. Fences and walls cannot be located in any required sight triangle, which the § 430-5 definition describes as a triangular area at street intersections where nothing can be erected, placed or planted in a way that impairs the line of sight of motorists. Under subsection (F)(11), no fence can be situated so as to obstruct the view of vehicular or pedestrian traffic at any intersection or crosswalk, and (F)(12) says nothing in the section supersedes the mandatory sight triangle requirements found elsewhere in the chapter.

Height limits follow the yard. A fence in any yard cannot exceed four feet at any point within the front yard. Hedges running parallel to the front property line are capped at four feet toward the ground the front entrance of a dwelling in a residential zone faces. Fences and hedges running parallel to side or rear yard lines can reach six feet in the side or rear yards of a dwelling in a residential zone at any point to the rear of the rear building line. For corner lots in the R-25 Zone, the largest rectangular area enclosed from the principal building to the rear property lines can be fenced at six feet if the fence sits at or behind the building setback line.

Subsection (F)(9) lifts the height cap for fencing within ten feet of the periphery of a private wading or swimming pool. Subsection (F)(7) caps fences beside crosswalks that bisect two residential properties at six feet on the crosswalk side, with a two-foot setback from the crosswalk. In an industrial zone, fences in side and rear yards behind the principal building can be eight feet. Open wire fences up to eight feet are allowed in a public park, public playground or school premises. Height is measured from the ground directly under the fence to its highest point, and every fence must stay within the property lines.

The definition of front yard in § 430-5 adds a vision rule: in a required front yard, no fence or wall can materially impede vision across the yard above thirty inches.
