Wyandotte County, KS Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Sec. 8-223 sets two residential height bands: an open fence up to four feet is permitted anywhere on the owner's property except inside the sight-distance triangle, while a fence up to six feet is permitted only from the property's side line, running from the front of the house or main building back to the rear property line and across it, meaning the taller six-foot option applies to the side and rear yard rather than the front. Corner lots carry an added layer under Sec. 8-198: two sight-distance triangles measured 20 feet along the short leg and 140 feet along the long leg from the curb or pavement edge must stay free of any fence, shrubbery, or obstruction taller than two feet.

Non-residential zoning runs on different numbers: Sec. 8-249 permits agricultural districts to fence open farmland up to six feet, and allows a six-foot open fence anywhere on commercial or industrial property outside the sight triangle, stepping up to eight feet from the required front or corner-side setback back to the rear line. Any fence over six feet anywhere in the county still needs a Sec. 8-196 building-official permit before it goes up.
