Wyandotte County, KS Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

Sec. 8-196 requires anyone constructing or substantially replacing a fence taller than six feet to first obtain a permit from the building official. The owner, or an authorized agent or contractor, must file a written application listing the legal description of the property, the owner's name, the name of the agent or contractor if one is used, and plans and specifications for the proposed fence; the fence may only go up where the application says it will. The permit fee is set by the county administrator rather than fixed in the code itself.

Fences at or under six feet in residential districts, and at or under six feet in agricultural, office, commercial, and industrial districts (per Secs. 8-223 and 8-249), fall outside this permit trigger since it applies specifically to height. Once built, any fence must still meet Sec. 8-197's maintenance standard, staying vertical, uniform, and structurally sound, with wood or metal components painted, stained, or otherwise sealed against weathering, and any repairs must match the existing fence in color and material. Corner-lot fences must also respect the sight-distance triangle in Sec. 8-198, a 20-foot by 140-foot area along the curb line that must stay clear of anything over two feet tall.
