Glen Cove, NY Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

1J of the Glen Cove Zoning Code lists two categories of prohibited fencing in every zoning district: barbed wire or razor wire fences of any kind, and wire, twine or rope fences under three feet in height located within five feet of a public right-of-way. The code does not merely forbid these fences, it deems them public health nuisances and makes them subject to abatement under Chapter 199 of the City Code, a separate nuisance-abatement mechanism, rather than only a zoning citation. 1, which cap ordinary lot-line and yard fences at four feet on a front lot line and six feet along side or rear lines, require fences to present their finished side outward to the street, and keep any fence at least five feet back from a City sidewalk.

Corner-lot owners face an added restriction: no fence, wall, hedge or shrub over three feet may stand inside the sight triangle formed by the two street lines, and the Building Department can order it removed if it creates a traffic hazard. 1 sits in Chapter 280, Zoning, a violation of the barbed-wire or thin-wire ban also exposes the property owner to the chapter-wide penalty in § 280-74, on top of any nuisance-abatement order the City pursues separately under Chapter 199.
