The City of Maricopa prohibits barbed wire, razor wire, electrified fencing, embedded glass shards, and similar hazardous fencing in residential districts. Citywide, electric and barbed/razor wire fences are generally unlawful, with a limited security exception for commercial and industrial sites.
Fence material restrictions in the City of Maricopa are set in two places. Under zoning code MCC 18.80.090, in residential districts the use of barbed wire, razor wire, embedded glass shards, ultra barrier, electrified, and other hazardous fencing is prohibited, and the same prohibition applies in all commercial and mixed-use districts and on the perimeter or street-facing frontages of industrial districts. Separately, MCC 9.30.010 makes it unlawful for any person to erect or maintain within the city any electric fence or any fence constructed in whole or in part of barbed, razor, or similar wire. That section provides a narrow exception: security barbed wire may be placed atop fences at commercial or industrial facilities, but only if it is located no less than six (6) feet above ground level at any point, and only where zoning does not otherwise prohibit it. Fences violating these rules are declared public nuisances subject to abatement through the city court. Chain-link fencing is also restricted: in residential districts it may be used only when it is not visible from off site, and it is not permitted in commercial, mixed-use, or industrial districts. Corral fences may not be constructed of metal wire such as chain link or barbed wire.
Prohibited barbed, razor, or electric fences are declared public nuisances and may be ordered abated through the city court. Noncompliant chain link can be denied a permit or required to be screened or removed.
