Puyallup, WA Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Puyallup regulates fence height and fence materials together in the same performance-standards subsection for each zoning district. 040(6) caps fence and wall height at three and a half feet within 20 feet of the front lot line (five feet for open-wire, welded-wire, chain-link or split-rail fencing), six feet in rear and interior side yards, and six feet in the street side yard subject to the same reduced height near the front corner; subsection (6)(f) then bars barbed wire or razor wire on any fence or wall in the zone, with a single exception for pasture areas of at least 40,000 square feet, which may still be fenced with barbed wire.

040(7)(e) simply states that no fence or wall may include the use of barbed wire or razor wire, after setting the same three-and-a-half-foot front yard and six-foot rear/side yard height limits. 65 PMC. Fences and walls built within the footprint of a permitted building may rise as high as the building itself, and low fences at or under three and a half feet may still project into required front and street side yards under the yard-projection rules that immediately follow the fence standards.
