56 Electric Vehicle Infrastructure, governs how charging equipment interacts with a site's required parking. The section applies to all parking lot, garage or on-street parking spaces except restricted electric vehicle charging stations. A standard size parking space may double as a charging station space, and a charging space may be counted toward the minimum number of parking spaces otherwise required elsewhere in the municipal code; the city sets no minimum number of charging spaces a project must provide. Where charging stations serve the public, they are reserved for parking and charging electric vehicles only, and an electric vehicle may otherwise park in any public space under the same restrictions as any other vehicle.

The enforcement teeth sit in subsection (3)(c) and (3)(d): no person may stop, stand or park a nonelectric vehicle in a space designated by signage as an electric vehicle charging station, and any such vehicle is subject to fine or removal, while an electric vehicle that is not actually charging, or that overstays the posted days and hours, is likewise subject to fine or removal as posted by the property owner or the owner's agent. Design criteria in subsection (4) require posted signage naming hours of operation, voltage/amperage and fee information, plus directional signage to the stations; equipment mounted on pedestals or bollards must clear the curb face by at least 24 inches, and outlets and connectors must sit between 36 and 48 inches above the mounting surface. 56 dates to Ordinance 2980 (2011).
