Naperville, IL Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

Section 6-2-12 (Fences) regulates fence height, placement, and permitting for every zoning district in the City. 7 of the Municipal Code, for all fences exceeding three feet in height before a fence is erected on any property within the City. The current one- and two-family residential fee schedule lists the fence permit at eighty-eight dollars, the same fee schedule that prices other minor accessory-structure permits like air conditioners and backflow preventers. The three-foot trigger tracks the height where the fence rules themselves get more restrictive: fences up to three feet may go behind the front or corner side yard line without special review, while anything taller brings in both the permit fee and the placement standard for that district.

In residence districts, six-foot fences are allowed behind the required front building line and nine-foot fences are allowed along a property line abutting a nonresidential use or a major arterial. Business district fences in the interior side or rear yard may reach fifteen feet, and industrial district fences may also reach fifteen feet, so the permit review scales with how tall and how close to the lot line the fence will sit. 12. The Zoning Administrator issues fence permits and inspects fence construction as part of general zoning enforcement under Section 6-3-1.
