Eden Prairie, MN Fire Regulations: Fire Pits & Backyard Fires (2026)

City Code Section 9.05, Subd. 8 (Open Burning) prohibits open burning within the City of Eden Prairie except for five listed categories, and recreational fires are one of them under Subd. 8.A.3. No permit is required for a recreational fire, but no more than one fire is allowed per parcel or lot at a time, and all Fire Department rules must be followed. The provision expressly prohibits recreational fires whenever a burning ban or air quality alert is in effect, so a resident must check the current burning-restriction status before lighting one.

Separately, prairie burns (Subd. 8.A.1) and Minnesota River flood-debris burns (Subd. 8.A.2) require an actual open burning permit from the Fire Department; prairie burns further need a City Forester-approved management plan and Fire Chief-approved trained crews on site. Under Subd. 8.C, anyone hosting a recreational fire is responsible for all costs the City incurs suppressing it, including fire suppression and administrative fees. Enforcement runs through the Eden Prairie Fire Department, and Subd. 9 lets a permit applicant appeal a denial or a disputed application of the Minnesota State Fire Code to the Board of Adjustments and Appeals within thirty days of the decision.
