Eden Prairie, MN Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Eden Prairie adopts the Minnesota State Fire Code as its Fire Code under Section 9.05, Subd. 1, with the Fire Chief serving as the Fire Code Official who enforces it through the department of fire prevention under Subd. 2. Subd. 3.G adds a new Section 6103 to Chapter 61 of the MSFC dealing specifically with liquefied petroleum gases. Section 6103.1 requires an installer to get a Fire Department permit and plan approval before putting in a single LP-gas container, or an interconnected group of containers, that reaches 500 gallons of water capacity or more; smaller residential-sized tanks below that threshold fall outside the permit requirement.

Section 6103.2 adds a physical-protection rule once a single container, or interconnected containers in the aggregate, reach 2,000 gallons: the installation must be buried in an approved manner, mounded in an approved manner, protected by a Fire Code Official-approved water-application system, or protected by another method the Fire Code Official approves. The general permit provisions in Subd. 6 apply on top of these specific rules: applications go to the Fire Department on City forms, the Fire Code Official can deny a permit that would violate any law or endanger public health, safety or welfare, permits carry conditions and fees set by the City, and a permit is subject to revocation for a compliance failure. An installer who disagrees with a permit denial can appeal to the Board of Adjustments and Appeals within 30 days under Subd. 9.
