Louisburg, KS Fire Regulations: Fire Pits & Backyard Fires (2026)

Section 7-209(d) allows the building of fires for cooking, recreational, or ceremonial purposes on public or private land regularly used for recreational purposes, as one of the listed exceptions to Louisburg's general open-burning ban. The subsection sets specific size limits: a campfire in an approved camping area cannot be more than four feet in diameter at its base, and a bonfire in an approved area cannot exceed ten feet in diameter at the base, though the Fire Chief may approve a larger base on request.

Anyone planning a bonfire must notify the Fire Department at least twenty-four hours in advance, giving the department a chance to flag conditions or deny the burn. These recreational-fire rules sit alongside the other § 7-209 exceptions: yard-debris burning is restricted to Fridays and Saturdays under Governing Body resolution conditions (a), enclosed fireplace and wood-stove burning is allowed inside occupied structures (b), and non-commercial cooking fires must be contained (c). Subsection (g) still applies on top of the recreational-fire allowance: no fire pit, campfire, or bonfire may be set on a public street, alley, curb, sidewalk, or other public right-of-way, regardless of size, unless the City itself is conducting the burn or the Fire Chief approves it.

Section 7-215 gives the Chief of Police and any City law enforcement officer authority to enforce these limits and take whatever action is necessary to control a fire that exceeds them or otherwise violates the article.
