Louisburg, KS Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Section 4-901 states that all above ground and underground propane tanks and their use are prohibited within the corporate limits of the City, making Louisburg's default rule a citywide ban rather than a size or setback limit. Section 4-902 then lists the only exceptions: tanks of 20 pounds or less; standard tanks fueling petroleum-powered vehicles, including RVs; temporary construction heating tanks approved by the public officer, who sets the allowed duration; and, most relevant for homeowners with larger tanks, residential and commercial heating tanks of more than 20 pounds capacity when approved by the Governing Body of the City of Louisburg.

That means anyone wanting a standard 100-gallon or larger residential LP-gas tank, the kind commonly used to fuel a furnace or water heater in areas without natural gas service, must first get the Governing Body, the city's mayor and council acting together, to sign off on it rather than simply pulling a building permit. A commercial propane filling station is allowed separately if it meets all other local, state and federal requirements. Section 4-903 defines liquefied petroleum gases and L-P gases broadly to include propane, propylene, butane and butylenes, so the ban and its approval requirement reach any tank storing those fuels, not propane specifically.
