Sanford, FL Fire Regulations: Fireworks (2026)

Sanford's fireworks restriction is written into the parks-use article rather than a standalone fireworks chapter: Sec. 62-66 prohibits anyone from carrying, firing or discharging 'any destructive device, explosive, or weapon...or any fireworks, as defined in controlling state law, of any description, in a city park.' Because the ordinance borrows the state-law definition of fireworks, the same exemptions Florida law carries for sparklers and other novelties apply here too. The same section also bars bows and arrows (including crossbows), rockets, golf clubs, and radio-controlled planes, boats, cars and helicopters from city parks, though the City Commission can lift that ban for a particular park by adopting a resolution, for example to allow a permitted display at a designated site.

The section was amended in 2011 (Ord. No. 4254) after Florida's legislature restricted local firearms regulation under F.S. Sec. 790.33; Sanford's commission recited that state action in adopting the current text, so the fireworks language predates and survives that firearms preemption fight. A violation is enforced under the parks article's penalty section, Sec. 62-79, which applies the Code's general penalty in Sec. 1-7: a fine of up to $500.00, up to 60 days in jail, or both, and the city may additionally seek injunctive relief or bar the violator from further use of city parks and facilities.
