The Joint Board of Fire Commissioners of Brick Township, known as the Bureau of Fire Safety, is the enforcing agency. Open burning can be ordered extinguished if a neighbor complains about smoke or if weather conditions create a fire spread risk. Bonfires require a permit from the NJ Forest Fire Service in cooperation with local firewardens.
Fines up to $5,000 per violation. Reimbursement of costs associated with extinguishing the fire may be required.
