Glen Cove, NY Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Section 168-30E of the Housing Standards, in Chapter 168's fuel gas provisions, governs liquefied petroleum gas at residential properties in Glen Cove. Liquefied petroleum gas in liquid form may not be stored inside a building, and it may not be vaporized using devices with an open flame or open electrical coil. Where two or more containers are installed, the connections must be arranged so containers can be swapped without shutting off the gas flow to equipment, and every container must be protected against physical damage and located so it is not a hazard to the premises, with nonportable containers resting on stable, noncombustible supports.

The gas itself must be odorized so a leak is recognizable by its smell, and the system must include a safety device that relieves excess pressure to the outer air, released a safe distance from building openings. The number of required shutoff valves scales with container size: a system supplied from containers of 125 gallons or less needs at least one accessible shutoff valve located outside the building, while a system supplied from containers exceeding 125 gallons needs at least two accessible shutoff valves, one outside at a safe distance from the building and protected against unauthorized use, and the other ahead of the meter as close as practicable to the point of service entrance, matching the placement rules for standard utility gas shutoffs in Section 168-30B.

As with the rest of Chapter 168, the Building Department Administrator enforces these standards and a violation is punishable under Section 168-63's fine schedule, from $1,000 for a first offense up to $5,000 for a third.
