Springfield, OH Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Springfield adopted the 2017 Ohio Fire Code with City-specific amendments at Section 1501.01, creating the Springfield Fire Prevention Code (SFPC). One amendment adds OFC Section 105.1.1.1.5, requiring a permit for the stationary installation or modification of a stationary LP-gas system; it sits alongside similar new permit requirements the City added for explosives storage and standpipe system removal in the same list of amendments. Permit fees generally run $75 per permit under the amended Section 112.1 unless the SFPC specifically sets a different fee for that permit type, and the Fire Official may consolidate multiple permits and fees for one project or event into a single, proportionately reduced charge under Section 112.1.1.

A property owner facing an unusual installation can seek a variance from any SFPC requirement, including the LP-gas permit rule, by written application showing the public's health and safety are still protected; a granted variance automatically expires one year after issuance and does not renew automatically, under Sections 104.8 through 104.8.3. Enforcement runs through the Fire Official or a certified fire safety inspector, who issues a citation for a violation found on inspection or investigation, or a notice in lieu of citation for a de minimis issue with no direct safety impact, under Sections 109.1.5 and 109.1.5.1.

Any tank, container, or structure used to store flammable or combustible material found dangerous to persons draws a citation under Section 109.1.5.2. Violating any Fire Prevention Code provision, including the LP-gas system permit requirement, is a first-degree misdemeanor under Section 1503.99, fined up to $1,000 and up to six months in jail, with each day a violation continues counted as a separate offense.
