Casper, WY Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Section 15.28.390 of the Casper Municipal Code, part of the adopted National Electrical Code chapter, requires that smoke detectors be installed in all hotels, motels and residential dwellings as required by the current International Building Code and International Residential Code, as adopted by the city of Casper, and specifies that every smoke detector in new construction and complete rewires must be supplied by line voltage, with battery backup. The section then sets a wiring standard unique to the electrical chapter: number 14/2 and 14/3 nonmetallic cable is permitted for the wiring and interconnection of smoke detectors when used with a dedicated fifteen-amp branch circuit in one-family and two-family dwelling units.

The rule works alongside the maintenance duty in Section 15.02.150(D), which separately requires that smoke alarms be installed and maintained in institutional and residential dwellings where required, as part of the city's unsafe-structures enforcement. Because Section 15.28.390 ties the installation trigger back to whatever the current International Building Code and International Residential Code call for, the number and placement of detectors follows those adopted model codes rather than a separate stand-alone city list. The city electrical inspector, appointed under Section 15.28.030, reviews smoke-detector wiring as part of the permit and inspection process for new construction and rewires, and issues the certificate of approval required before wiring is concealed.
