Clifton, NJ Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Clifton Code Chapter 233, Article III requires every dwelling unit to comply with the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code's smoke detector installation rules (§ 233-16A). Detectors must combine the sensor, control equipment and alarm in one assembly, run on a monitored battery or a plug-in cord fitted with a plug restrainer that only the main power switch controls, and may be interconnected so one activation sounds every unit (§ 233-16B). The alarm must be audible in every room with the doors closed, distinct from any other signaling device in the unit, and capable of self- or manual restoration; nothing may disable the audible signal except by resetting the system (§ 233-16C).

Before any transfer of title, rental, or change of occupancy, the owner must apply to the City's enforcing agency for a certificate of smoke detector compliance, and no certificate of occupancy issues until the applicant has met every requirement of the chapter; the inspection fee is $30 per dwelling unit per inspection (§ 233-18). The Fire Official, advised by the Construction Official, may modify the requirements in writing on written application where strict compliance creates practical difficulties, provided public safety is still secured (§ 233-17). The Bureau of Fire Prevention or another code enforcement agency of the City administers and enforces the chapter (§ 233-21).
