Clifton, NJ Parking Rules: RV & Boat Parking (2026)

Clifton Code § 461-22 splits recreational equipment into two tracks. Boats and trailers (Subsection B) may never be parked or stored in a front yard, in front of the front-yard building line, or in the street-side yard of a corner lot; they must go in an enclosed garage or the side/rear yard, meet accessory-building setbacks, and if outside a garage be screened with at least six feet of trellis, latticework, decorative block, basketweave fencing, or shrubbery sized to the boat plus eight feet. In residential districts boats and related trailers cannot exceed 18 feet overall (22 feet in business/industrial districts).

Before storing one outside a garage, the owner must get a Zoning Officer permit that expires every January 1 and renews annually; the application needs the owner's name and address, the lot's block/lot and street address, the screening plan, and a scaled plot plan. The permit fee is $20 for first issuance and $10 per renewal (amended 4-18-2023 by Ord. No. 7813-23). A no-fee temporary permit, capped at 14 days and limited to two per property (90 days apart), covers short-term parking that will not hurt the look of abutting lots or block their light and air.

A. 40:55D-70c variance. Screening for RVs must be at least six feet high and sized to the vehicle plus eight feet in width and five feet in length, capped at 16 by 40 feet overall. In commercial or industrial zones an RV needs Planning Board site-plan review ($25 per vehicle) with a decision due within 45 days. No parked RV may ever be occupied for sleeping, eating or business, and any RV lacking a current registration or showing visible disrepair must be kept in a fully enclosed building.
