Clifton, NJ Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Clifton Code Ch. 439, Art. I governs vehicles and traffic citywide. Section 439-3 authorizes the Police Department to impound any vehicle 'parked illegally or in violation of any state law or City ordinance, or in such a manner as to obstruct any street or driveway, or parked in a place where parking is prohibited,' as well as any vehicle on a street that lacks the current year's registration. Impounded cars are towed to a location set by the Chief of Police, who must send the owner notice within five days.

Section 439-3(A) separately defines an emergency-obstruction category for vehicles parked where posted signs prohibit parking during street, water, sewer, gas main or utility repair work. If an impounded vehicle sits unclaimed for 30 days, § 439-3(D) directs the Chief of Police to sell it at public auction after seven days' newspaper notice and mailed notice to the registered owner. Section 439-2 lets the Police Chief close any street to traffic when necessary for public safety, with warning signs required and any closure over 48 hours needing state DOT approval.
