Greenwich, CT Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: Food Truck Permits (2026)

Chapter 3, Article 2 of the Code of Ordinances treats food sold from a truck as "vending," defined in Sec. 3-15.2 to include selling articles of food from a motor vehicle adapted for that purpose. Sec. 3-16.2 bars any vendor, including a mobile food operator, from vending anywhere in Town without a permit issued by the Consumer Affairs Coordinator with the prior approval of the Chief of Police. Sec. 3-19.2 offers two permit types: an annual permit good through December 31 of the issuance year, or a special events permit good only for one event's site and hours.

Sec. 3-21.1 prices the annual permit at $250, plus $100 for each named assistant who also vends from the truck, and prices the special events permit at $50; the Board of Selectmen can waive the fee for a 501(c)(3) organization. Before a permit issues, Sec. 3-21.2 requires a sworn application listing the applicant's identifying information, a description of the food to be sold, proof of a state sales and use tax permit, and, for anyone vending on public property, a $500,000 liability policy naming the Town as an additional insured plus a signed indemnification of the Town.

Sec. 3-21.3 gives the Chief of Police up to twenty business days to investigate the applicant's business and moral character before the Consumer Affairs Coordinator issues or denies the permit. Sec. 3-18.1 layers on a separate health-inspection duty: every vendor selling food or beverages must also comply with Chapter 4 and other Municipal Code and state health provisions.
