Irvine, CA Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: Food Truck Permits (2026)

Under Irvine, CA Municipal Code Sec. 4-10-402, it is unlawful to operate any food facility, vending machine business, food processing establishment, "or any other food handling business governed by this chapter", which by definition (Sec. 4-10-401) includes mobile food preparation units, without first applying for and receiving a food vending permit from the Health Department, defined in this chapter as the Orange County Health Care Agency. " A permit is issued only after investigation confirms the unit and its operating method will conform to all applicable laws; it is nontransferable and valid only for the approved person, location, and type of food sales.

Permits may be granted at any time of year and must be posted conspicuously on the vehicle. Sec. -rated fire extinguisher must sit in plain sight just inside the driver's door; seated occupants must wear seat belts and may not cook while the unit is in motion; and LPG tanks must be ASME-approved, vapor-sealed from open flame, and vented to the exterior. Trucks working more than one stop per day face further requirements under Sec. 4-10-408, including spill-proof coffee urns, lidded deep fat fryers (otherwise prohibited outright), baffled warming tables, and a labeled safety exit at least 24x24 inches.

Any permit may be suspended or revoked for violating state law, this chapter, or Health Department rules under Sec. 4-10-409, and refusing entry to a Health Department inspector under Sec. 4-10-413 is itself a chargeable violation that can trigger immediate suspension.
