Lenexa, KS Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: Vending Zones (2026)

Lenexa's zoning code has no separate food truck chapter and does not use that phrase in its special events rules. Section 4-1-B-25-B-2-d lists parking lot sales of food among Type 1 Special and Seasonal Sales Events, defined as commercial activities not conducted in an enclosed building or regular place of business. That is the route for a food vendor working from a commercial parking lot in the City of Lenexa.

The application goes to the Community Development Department with a fee set by the City Council, at least 10 days before the start date. The City then approves, approves with conditions or denies within 5 days of the application. The applicant submits a sketch plan showing on-site rest rooms, trash receptacles and parking areas, plus written confirmation from the property owner.

Section 4-1-B-25-E sets the limits. Parking lot sales of food are capped at a maximum duration of 14 weeks per year, and a business can hold no more than four special events per calendar year on the same property. Stalls dedicated to all concurrent special events cannot exceed 20 percent of required stalls or 30 stalls, whichever is less, and drives or maneuvering areas can be used only when directly adjacent to the approved area and not needed for emergency access or circulation.

Sales lasting more than 7 days face extra rules: equipment and materials stored in a fully enclosed trailer or structure that is secured when closed, skirting around the base of any trailer or structure where applicable, durable ancillary furnishings, metered electric service and no external generator. A shorter event that uses an external generator must comply with Section 4-1-C-4 and shield it from public view. Section 4-8-B-9 separately amends Section 319 of the International Fire Code: mobile food preparation vehicles with appliances producing smoke or grease-laden vapors must comply with the 2021 edition of NFPA 1 Chapter 50.
