Lenexa, KS Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Lenexa regulates garage sales through the zoning code, in Section 4-1-B-24-F-6 of the Unified Development Code. Garage sales, craft sales and manufacturers' sample sales are a permitted accessory use in the residential zoning districts, provided four conditions are met. First, no more than 2 sales events can be conducted on the premises in any calendar year. Second, no sales event can run longer than 4 days. Third, sales events can be conducted during the daylight hours only, so evening or overnight selling is outside the rule.

Fourth, the sign regulations cited in the section must be followed. The printed cross-reference points to Section 4-1-E-4-N of the sign article, which in the exported code covers signs on machinery and equipment, while the temporary sign provision sits at Section 4-1-E-4-F, so a resident should read the temporary sign rule for sign duration. The limit counts events per premises, not per seller, so a third sale at the same address in one calendar year falls outside the allowance even if a different neighbor hosts it.

The code does not print a permit or fee for a garage sale in this section. Businesses in the BP-1 and BP-2 districts follow a separate rule for warehouse or inventory reduction sales: no more than 4 times per calendar year, with each sale limited to 3 days, in Section 4-1-B-24-E. That business allowance does not extend to residential garage sales.
