Sandy, UT Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Sandy City Code Section 21-11-15 sets firm numeric limits on residential garage sales. A homeowner may hold no more than three garage sales per calendar year, defined as January 1 through December 31, and consecutive sale events must be separated by at least a 14-day gap so residents cannot chain sales together into a continuous operation. Each sale is capped at 48 consecutive hours, meaning a typical weekend sale must wrap up within two days. The ordinance also restricts location: a garage sale must take place at the actual residence of the person who owns the items being sold.

Sandy does allow neighborhood or 'super' garage sales where three to five neighbors pool belongings, but even then the goods must be consolidated at only one of the participating sellers' homes rather than displayed at each house separately. On the goods side, the code requires that everything sold be used items that actually came from that residence; items purchased or acquired elsewhere with the intent to resell them at a garage sale are explicitly called out as prohibited and a violation of the section. Commercial-area temporary sales are carved out and instead fall under the separate temporary-use provisions found elsewhere in Title 21.

The rule sits in Chapter 21-11, Special Use Standards, alongside the City's other accessory and temporary-use ordinances, and was carried into the current Land Development Code from LDC 2008, Section 15A-11-15.
