The subsection pairs that sign limit with a broader ban on physical changes: no alteration, exterior or interior, temporary or permanent, that changes the essential residential character of the property is allowed, and the code lists additional entrances, additional bathrooms, and accessible ramps as examples of what crosses that line.

Read together, the rule keeps a home occupation from looking or advertising like a storefront; if the business needs a customer-facing sign to operate, it has to seek conditional residential occupation review under chapter 19.65 or locate on a commercially zoned property instead. Elgin's code enforcement officer, designated under section 19.80.050, enforces this alongside the sign standards in chapter 19.50, and an unauthorized sign is treated as a zoning violation.
