Encinitas prohibits external signage for home-based businesses in residential zones. No signs, banners, window displays, or other visual indicators of commercial activity may be visible from the street or neighboring properties.
Encinitas Municipal Code prohibits any exterior signage for home occupation businesses in residential zoning districts. This restriction is part of the home occupation conditions designed to preserve the residential character of neighborhoods. No business signs may be placed on buildings, in yards, on fences, or in windows that are visible from the street or neighboring properties. Vehicle signage for commercial vehicles associated with a home business is subject to separate commercial vehicle restrictions. Business cards and marketing materials may list a home address but physical signs at the location are not permitted. Interior signs not visible from outside are not regulated. This restriction extends to temporary signs, banners, sandwich boards, and any form of commercial advertising on the property. The prohibition on home business signage is separate from general residential sign rules, which permit limited signs for other purposes such as political signs, real estate signs, and small nameplate signs. Businesses requiring customer-facing signage should locate in an appropriate commercial zone. Contact the Planning Division at (760) 633-2710 with questions about permitted signs.
Posting business signage at a home occupation may result in code enforcement citations and jeopardize the home occupation status. Fines start at $100 per violation.
